Luanda — At least 239 Cuban physicians are expected in the country to
reinforce the national health system, under the agreement signed last
February between the governments of the two countries, announced Tuesday
the Angolan Health minister, José Van-Dúnem.

The government official told the press, on the sidelines of the private
meeting between the presidents José Eduardo dos Santos and Raul Castro
Ruz that some 605 Cuban professionals will cover all the country's
provinces.

According to the minister, without specifying the date for their
arrival, there are 200 professionals working in the hospitals and in the
surrounding units.

Asked on the number of the physicians needed for each province, he
recalled that the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends one
professional for 1,000 inhabitants. Therefore there is one physician for
10,000 inhabitants.

"There is a programme with Cuba, aimed at working together on a vaccine
against cholera", stressed the minister.

The Secretary of State for Higher Education, with support of the Cuban
cooperation, has created five faculties of medicine that will join the
Faculty of Medicine of Agostinho Neto University and the Private
University of Angola (UPRA).

In terms of infrastructures, were rehabilitated hospitals of Lubango,
Malanje, Benguela and Huambo.
